Colourful Morris dance festival to visit city

Morris madness: The High Street will be taken over by colourful Morris dancers in September, as part of the Morris festival.

Morris dancers will be descending across Lincoln’s High Street next month as part of Lincoln BIG’s Morris Festival. Up to 15 dance groups from the East Midlands and Yorkshire will be taking part in various displays between September 4 and 5.

The festival begins on Saturday with Morris dancing displays from 10.30am to 12.30pm at St Benedict’s Square and Brayford Pool. This will be followed by a musical jamming session in Minster Yard, outside the Victoria pub and Lion & Snake pub garden from 2pm to 3pm, before another mass display to finish the day.

For those wanting to take part or learn about Morris dancing, Lincoln Drill Hall will be hosting a grand Ceilidh, featuring a display by Lincoln’s Poacher Morris, and offering dancing for everyone. On Sunday afternoon, Bishop Grosseteste College will host music and dance workshops.

The Morris Festival will conclude with a showing of the light-hearted film Morris: A Life with Bells On (trailer below) at Bishop Grosseteste College.
