Holiday wash-out as roof floods Sainsbury’s

Roof leak: Thunderstorms put a dampener on Lincoln’s Easter holiday celebrations as a roof leaked at the city’s biggest supermarket.

Sainsbury’s on Tritton Road was forced to close for over an hour due to a leak in the roof, as thunderstorms put a dampener on Lincoln’s Easter holiday celebrations.

The new 24-hour superstore told customers they would have to proceed to check-out tills at around 7pm on Saturday, April 23 and vacate the supermarket.

This was because rain water was seeping in through the roof and flooded the floor and several isles.

Despite closing off the flooded area with warning signs, staff could not contain the flood. But staff coped with the situation, calmly helping shoppers through the tills and out of the store.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said: “We have to close the store until we have solved the problem with the roof.”

Sainsbury’s has now reopened.

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for the East Midlands with 20-30mm of rainfall possible in one or two hours in some places.

Temperatures in Lincoln should be back up to 18 degrees at 1pm tomorrow according to weather forecasts.
