Lincoln trampolinist aims for national title

Promising: A young Lincoln trampolinist has a chance to qualify for a place at the National Championship.

A young Lincoln trampolinist has a chance this weekend to qualify for a place at the National Championships in Birmingham later this year.

Twelve-year-old Alice Meanwell missed out on qualifying last month in Hull by 0.4 points, giving her 49.6 of the 50 points needed for a place.

Meanwell said: “I felt annoyed with myself as I was only 0.4 off, but when I thought about it, it was only my second competition and there are lots of other girls who have been competing for longer than me and have never made it to the national finals.

“I want to compete in the nationals because it is the finale of all the competitions all year.

“Everyone would love to be national champion; it is what I will be working towards for some years.”

The championships will be held at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham on July 23, and the qualifier held at the Welsh Institute of Sport in Cardiff this Saturday.

Meanwell is also a new member of the Lincolnshire Elite Athlete Programme (LEAP), run by Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, which fund county athletes.

LEAP Project Officer Rachel Belcher said: “Alice was so close to gaining a place at the National Championships at her last competition, that I have every confidence she will qualify this weekend in Wales.

“We wish her the best of luck, and hope to hear good news next week!”
