Steep Hill best UK street celebrations to begin

Lions on Steep Hill: Chinese New Year will be celebrated in style on Britain’s Greatest Street next week.

Chinese New Year celebrations next week will mark the official start of Steep Hill’s year holding the title of UK’s best street from the Academy of Urbanism.

A traditional Chinese lion dance and firecrackers will mark the festivities at midday on Tuesday, January 31 in an event organised by the City of Lincoln Council and Lincoln BIG.

Chinese lanterns will glow above the street and passers-by will also be given ‘good luck’ money.

Matt Corrigan, Chief Executive of Lincoln BIG, said: “Steep Hill plays an important role in Lincoln as the link between the city’s historic Cathedral Quarter and the High Street .

“It is also home to more than 50 small independent retail businesses, pubs, cafes, bars and restaurants employing more than 250 people.

“There are a lot of great events planned for the year ahead but what better way to start these off than a new year celebration?”

City Councillor Neil Murray said: “We want to harness the enthusiasm that this award has brought to Steep Hill and its surrounding area, and look forward to a number of events and initiatives that will really boost it.”

Around 40 representatives from businesses, organisations and individuals from Steep Hill met this week to discuss further events on Steep Hill during 2012.
