Lincolnshire YMCA have raised £8,700 for a new Lincoln night shelter after a night sleeping rough.

The national Sleep Easy event saw fundraisers take shelter armed only with sleeping bags and cardboard boxes.

The Lincoln event on February 28 saw over 100 people take shelter in the grounds of Lincoln Cathedral.

Participants of all ages came together for the 12-hour stint with one fundraiser, Jackie Hunt, even celebrating her 76th Birthday while taking part alongside her daughter and granddaughter.

Matthew Stanton, from Meddo Construction who sponsor Sleep Easy every year, said: “The experience was such an eye opener. It just goes to show that we take for granted our comforts at home and often don’t stop to think how not having these can affect us both physically and mentally.”

The Lincolnshire YMCA and The Nomad Trust, working in partnership following a recent merger of the two charities, are involved in a number of housing support projects in the county, offering advice, welfare support and accommodation.
