Council takes action to evict travellers at North Hykeham sports centre

Court action sought: NKDC has requested a possession order that would require a group of travellers to leave North Kesteven Sports Centre.

North Kesteven District Council has moved to take legal action against a group of travellers who are camping at North Kesteven Sports Centre.

The group of around ten caravans pitched up on the centre car park, next to North Kesteven School off Moor Lane, on Sunday, June 21.

The council’s planning enforcement officer visited the site on Monday, June 23 alongside Lincolnshire County Council’s Traveller Liaison Officer.

A possession order is now being sought in order to force the group to vacate.

An NKDC spokesperson said: “Following the joint site visit, North Kesteven District Council has now formally requested its legal team to seek a possession order that will require the encampment to vacate the land.

“The council has chosen the quickest legal route available, however we are still legally required to give the campers at least two clear days’ notice of the court hearing.

“Our legal team will be requesting a court date with a view to obtaining the required possession order. It will be for the court to decide how quickly the group can be directed to leave the land.

“NKDC will endeavour to resolve this matter as quickly as possible, and has recommended to the school, which is also affected by the encampment, to report any incidents to Lincolnshire Police if they occur.”
