Full time trial results after first leg of Lincolnshire cycling championships

Against the clock: The first day of the British Cycling National Championships saw up to 30,000 visitors head to Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire for the time trials.

The first day of the British Cycling National Championships saw thousands of visitors head to Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire for the time trials.

Alex Dowsett, Hayley Simmonds and Scott Davies each took the time trial titles in the men’s, women’s and under-23’s events respectively.

Dowsett produced a dominant performance to equal Stuart Dangerfield’s record of four British time trial titles, setting a time of just over an hour on the 44.8-kilometre course that combined open roads and the motor racing circuit.

Afterwards he told British Cycling that the course was more challenging than he expected.

He said: “In training I thought it would be easier in the race but it was actually harder, so I had no idea how well I was going out there.

“It’s really significant being national champion. Now every time I do a time-trial I get to wear this.”

Team Velosport’s Hayley Simmonds was the winner of the British women’s title, finishing over a minute ahead of Molly Weaver and Dame Sarah Storey.

Simmonds, who moved from rowing in 2009, said: “It’s completely overwhelming – I’ve worked really hard for this.

“I hoped it was going to be really close and I just went out and did the ride that I thought I could, did the effort I thought I could and obviously it paid off.”

Earlier in the day, 100% ME’s Scott Davies retained his British under-23 time trial title, finishing ahead of fellow Welshman, Team Wiggins’ Owain Doull, to retain the jersey he won in Monmouthshire 12 months ago.

The 19-year-old from Carmarthen said: “Relieved is the word that I’d use to describe how today went.

“It’s quite rolling so there’s no real stretch where you can hold the same pace. It’s up, down and up. That steep hill is quite tough as well – quite a testing course.”
