The lid was lifted on hundreds of theories when Lincoln residents complained of a mystery droning noise heard in the city.
Annoyed by the persistent low-pitched hum, readers of The Lincolnite took to social media and emailed reporters to argue their views on what could be causing the sound.
The blame was falling on city contractors on ongoing developments, RAF exercises, changes in the weather, wind turbines, keyboard warriors at work, aliens and even university students.
Some had stronger feelings than others when the story went live. Alison Riley said the noise was ‘driving her crazy’, backed up by Ian Reynolds who said in his 40 years in Lincoln he’d never been bothered before now.
In contrast, others considered the noise to be an accepted consequence of life in ‘Bomber County’. Andy Smith said: “The sound of a plane over our city is nothing new”, adding it’s the “sound of freedom”.
Julian Guffogg asked: “Why are people even discussing this? It’s been happening ages. I don’t even notice it these days.”
Aviation enthusiasts in the county have been linking the droning noise to a number of specific aircraft like the C130 Hercules. But no one has been able to confirm this.
