Month-long works to upgrade gas mains in Lincoln village

Almost 300 metres of gas mains are in line for a major upgrade in Bracebridge Heath near Lincoln, with temporary traffic lights and lane closures in place for over a month.

National Grid will replace gas mains along A15 London Road through Bracebridge Heath, with work taking place between August 1 and September 4.

New plastic pipes will take the place of ageing iron mains that are said to last for at least 80 years once they are in the ground.

Contractors will be on site from the A15 London Road, opposite Red Hall Drive, down to A15 Sleaford Road, just north of Davy’s Lane.

To carry out the work safely temporary traffic lights and lane closures will be needed. The work will be carried out in four phases:

Phase one: Work will take place between the junction with Red Hall Drive to Whitehall Crescent. There will be a lane closure on the southbound side of London Road from Canwick Avenue to Whitehall Crescent. The lane closure will be in operation from 9.30am to 3.30am. The footpath will also be closed on one side of the road with an alternative route in place.

Phase two: Work will stretch from the junction with Whitehall Crescent to Red Hall Farm Lane. A lane closure will be in place between these two junctions on the southbound side of London Road, from 9.30am to 3.30pm. The footpath will also be closed on one side of the road with an alternative route in place.

Phase three: Work will take place from the junction with Red Hall Farm Lane to Grantham Road. There will be a lane closure between these two junctions on the southbound side of London Road. Temporary traffic lights will be installed in the run up to the junction of Grantham Road and London Road. Staff will monitor the traffic lights to ensure traffic flows smoothly. Temporary pedestrian crossings, replacing the existing crossings, will be in installed while the work is under way. The temporary traffic management will be in place 24 hours a day. The footpath will also be closed on one side of the road with an alternative route in place.

Phase four: Work will see the gas mains replaced in London Road, between the Grantham Road junction and Davy’s Lane. During this phase the traffic management from phase three will remain in place for the last stage of the work. The footpath will also be closed on one side of the road with an alternative route in place.

Paul Martin, National Grid Authorising Engineer, said: “National Grid plays a vital role in keeping people warm and this essential work will mean that local residents and businesses can continue to enjoy a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.

“This is a busy road so the work has been timed to coincide with the school holidays, to reduce disruption to motorists.

“We will make every effort to minimise any inconvenience to local people and complete this work as soon as possible. We really appreciate people’s patience and co-operation.”

Gas engineers may need access to properties to replace service pipes (the pipes that take gas from the main in the road to individual properties). This work will involve temporarily interrupting the gas supply and anyone who is affected will be notified beforehand.

All National Grid engineers carry official identity cards, which people should ask to see before allowing them on their property.
