Fares for rail passengers across Lincolnshire will rise by up to 2.3% from January 2, 2017, industry leaders have confirmed.

There increases will go towards the running and improvement of services across the network, with providers also promising more than 5,500 new train carriages in the UK by the end of 2020.

New train fares are available to view online from Friday, December 2.

Paul Plummer, chief executive of the Rail Delivery Group which represents train operators and Network Rail, said: “We understand how passengers feel when fares go up, and we know that in some places they haven’t always got the service they pay for. Around 97p in every pound passengers pay goes back into running and improving services.

“Fares are influenced by government policy, either through government-regulated fares such as Season tickets or as a result of the payments train companies make to government. This money helps government to support the biggest investment in our railway since Victorian times.”

Rail customers travelling with East Midlands Trains will see a 1.5% rise (the equivalent of around 23p per average single journey).

East Midlands Trains is currently investing £13million in improvements for customers.

Jake Kelly, Managing Director of East Midlands Trains, said: “We have worked hard to offer the best value travel for our customers. The changes in January will mean fares for East Midlands Trains customers will on average reduce in real terms.

“As well as helping to fund the biggest national investment in the railways since Victorian times through increased payments to Government, the money from fares is also helping to drive many real improvements for customers across our network.”
