Three Lincoln schools named among the worst in the country

Government data judged them to be underperforming.

Three of Lincoln’s secondary schools have failed to meet minimum standards according to the latest government league tables.

Lincoln Castle Academy, Lincoln UTC and Sir Robert Pattinson Academy were three of the 365 underperforming schools across the UK named in the list.

Eight other schools in Lincolnshire failed to meet the national standard outlined by the government. Four in Boston, one in Gainsborough, one in Grantham, one in Grimsby and one in Skegness.

Analysis of the league tables by the Press Association has revealed that more than 260,000 students are being taught in underperforming secondary schools across the UK – roughly one in 12.

The main system schools are measured is Progress 8.

Progress 8 looks at progress a pupil has made between the end of primary school and the end of Year 11.

Their results across eight GCSEs are compared to other children with similar abilities and are given a score. 0 is average and the higher the score the better.

Schools are also compared by several other systems. Attainment 8 measures the average achievement across 8 subjects. The national average is 44.6.

% Grade 5 in English and Maths measures the percentage of pupils who score highly (9-5) in both English and Maths. The national average is 39.6%.

% EBacc measures pupils who score highly (9-5) in English and Maths whilst also scoring highly (A*-C) in their other subjects. The national average is 19.7%.

The 365 schools were regarded as underperforming by the government if they had Progress 8 scores of less than -0.5.
