The survey was carried on Facebook, where 500 friends of the festival voted for their best-loved reading material.

Topping the list was Harper Lee’s 1960 novel To Kill A Mockingbird, which deals with controversial issues of rape and racial inequality.

The top 10 contains:

  1. To Kill A Mockingbird: Harper Lee
  2. Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy: Douglas Adams
  3. The Time Traveler’s Wife: Audrey Niffenegger
  4. Pride And Prejudice: Jane Austen
  5. Pillars Of The Earth: Ken Follet
  6. The Stand: Stephen King
  7. Little Dorrit: Charles Dickens
  8. Room: Emma Donoghue
  9. His Dark Materials: Philip Pullman
  10. The Lord Of The Rings: JRR Tolkein

Organiser Sharon Stone said “the survey was a bit of fun in the build up to the festival.”

“But it reveals that Lincolnshire’s literary tastes are incredibly diverse, with readers enjoying everything from novelswith incredibly strong social and moral messages through to science fictioncomedy and fantasy tales involving dwarves, elves and orcs.”
