What to do in Lincoln for Discover Lincolnshire weekend

Discover Lincolnshire: Not sure of the best places to go during the Discover Lincolnshire weekend? Here’s an extensive list of all the events taking place.

The Discover Lincolnshire Weekend is an annual celebration of county-wide heritage, crafts and attractions with many destinations offering free admission to visitors, this year taking place on the weekend of March 22 and 23.

We have compiled a list of all the Discover Lincolnshire events happening across Lincoln that you can enjoy.

400-year-old tapestrys will be on display at Lincoln Castle during the Discover Lincolnshire weekend.

Lincoln Castle

Date: Sat 22 – Sun 23
Time: 10am – 4pm
Price: Free entry

Discover a world of rich history when you visit Lincoln Castle over the Discover Lincolnshire Weekend. Activities will be available within the Castle walls including medieval music, castle garrison, prison group and birds of prey.

This year, a preserved set of Flemish wall-hangings that were hand-stitched in the 1620s will be on show at Lincoln Castle’s Heritage Centre.

Visitors will be able to see the work going into preserving the tapestries, as well as learn create their own, free of charge.

Please note that the Castle is undergoing major work and the Magna Carta is not on display and the Prison building is currently closed.

Lincoln Cathedral

Price: Free entry, extra cost for tours

Visit Lincoln Cathedral on Saturday, March 22 and enjoy free admission for Discover Lincolnshire weekend.

In addition, there will be extra upper level tours available for over 14 year olds at a cost of £3.00 each, bookable in person on the day only.

Six roof tours beginning at 10.00am then every hour on the hour and six tower tours beginning at 10.30am every hour on the half hour.

The entrance desk will be open to take bookings from 09.15am (upper level tours are subject to safety restrictions).

Floor tours will also be available at 11.00am, 1.00pm and 3.00pm.

The Cathedral library will be open for visitors from 11.00am until 3.00pm.

Hartsholme Country Park

As part of the Discover Lincolnshire Weekend join Park Rangers for a guided walk to discover the history of Swanholme Lakes SSSI.

Whisby Nature Park.

The Natural World Centre, Whisby Nature Park

Jews Court

Time: 10am – 4pm
Price: Free

The 14th century building will be open Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm offering the bookshop, experts on the building’s history and access to the rooms and garden of the building.

Museum of Lincolnshire Life

Time: 10am – 4pm
Price: Free

Visit the museum for a fun day of traditional games in the games room. Learn to play chess, ludo, mancala and many other traditional games and head to the outdoor play area for some nostalgic Victorian playground games. Free entry all weekend.


Sir Joseph Banks Conservatory

Date: Sat 22 – Sun 23
Time: All day
Price: Free

The tropical conservatory at The Lawn will be offering free admission all weekend.

Jewish Heritage Trail

Date: Sun 23
Time: 1.30pm
Price: Free

Local guide Dorothy Moss will take you on a tour of the Jewish heritage of Lincoln. The tour will take place on Sunday 23rd March at 1:30pm, meeting outside the Visitor Information Centre.

Guildhall and Stonebow

Date: Sat 22 – Sun 23
Time: 10.30am and 1.30pm
Price: Free

Free guided tours of the Guildhall and Stonebow, including the City Council chambers and mayoral regalia, will take place on both days at 10:30am and 1:30pm. Meet at the front doors on Saltergate for the tour.

Museum of RAF and Firefighting, RAF Scampton

Date: Sat 22 – Sun 23
Time: Arranged by prior booking
Price: Free

Visit the RAF and Firefighting museum during the Discover Lincolnshire Weekend for a guided tour to see a large collection of 42 mainly ex-RAF fire appliances.

All visits to the Museum must be by prior arrangement. You Must bring some form of photo identification with you such as a driving license or passport for verification purposes. You will be met and escorted onto the Station by a member of the Museum staff once you are booked in.

Sightseeing Lincoln Tour Bus

Date: Sat 22 – Sun 23
Time: 10am / 11am / 12pm / 1pm / 2pm / 3pm
Price: Free

Tour Lincoln, Lincoln’s open-top sightseeing bus, will launch over Discover Lincolnshire Weekend with free tickets for tours on the Saturday and Sunday.

The tour takes in the highlights of Lincoln and you’ll hear all about the history of the city with our entertaining and knowledgeable guides giving live commentary throughout.

Tours are 50 minutes to an hour in duration and start/finish at Lincoln Cathedral Minster Yard.

You’ll be able to see the Transport Museum workshop and enjoy a classic bus service in and out of Lincoln on Sunday March 23.

Doddington Hall and Gardens

Visit the Doddington Gardens for free on Sunday 23rd March and pop by the farm shop and cafe whilst you are there. Please note that the Hall will open to the public from Easter.

Price: Free entry, plus one free tea or coffee per person

For the Discover Lincolnshire Weekend Bransby Horses are offering a free guided tour of the Charity to meet the horses, ponies and donkeys on Saturday and Sunday, meeting at the horse sense room at 1.30pm.

Visitors are asked to mention at the café that they are visiting the charity as part of the discover Lincolnshire weekend to obtain one free tea or coffee per person.

Newport Arch Road Closure

Those visiting the uphill area of Lincoln should also note that due to works to Newport Arch a road closure is in place.

The area is easily accessible via a small diversion and businesses are operating as usual.

During this time, access to Bailgate will be via Rasen Lane, Burton Road, Westgate and Chapel Lane.
