Teenage volunteers to put on glitzy event for children with special needs

Lincoln BAFTAs: Lincoln teenagers are putting on a night of showbiz glitz and glamour for students with severe educational needs.

Lincoln teenagers are putting on a night of showbiz glitz and glamour for students with severe educational needs.

The 14 National Citizen Service volunteers from the Lincoln have organised a BAFTA/Hollywood themed prom night, complete with red carpet and BAFTA-style awards for the prom king and queen, for over 40 students from Lincoln St Christopher’s School in North Hykeham.

The event is being held at the Queens Park Community Hub on South Park on July 10, starting at 6pm.

The volunteers, all aged between 17 and 19, have spent the last few months raising money and approaching businesses in Lincoln, to ask for donations and help to make the night happen.

Volunteer Dave Glover, 18, said: “We’ve raised over £500 through a sponsored supermarket bag pack at Morrisons and a sponsored static cycle at Yarborough Leisure Centre, as well as business donating things for us.

“Cafe Nero have donated poles for the velvet rope, Party Planet gave us some brilliant decorations and as well as giving us the bag-pack time, Morrisons have also donated some food. Everyone has been brilliant”

However, the group still need a few last minute items and are asking for help.

Volunteer Amy North, 18, said: “We still need more food and drink, as well as plates, cutlery and cups. If anyone has anything they can donate, we’d be really grateful.”

Fellow volunteer Beth Beresford, 17, added: “It’s been really good fun to organise and if we can just get the last few items we need, it will mean the world to everyone involved. We just want the students to have the best night we can possibly give them.”

Any money and items left over will be split between Lincoln St Christopher’s School and Queens Park Community Hub.
