A new 1,430 sqm training workshop in Stallingborough has been given the go-ahead to help boost skilled staff in the local energy, chemicals and engineering sectors.

Working in partnership with HCF CATCH and ENGIE, North East Lincolnshire Council has secured almost £3.9 million to expand the training provision at the CATCH site.

Funding includes a £1.75 million grant from the government’s Local Growth Fund via the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership.

The facility, which is expected to take on its first students in September 2017, will increase provision for apprenticeships, helping local people to access long-term careers in these and other sectors.

The funding has also enabled the council to purchase the nine acre site adjacent to the current CATCH facility and deliver the necessary highway and utility infrastructure to prepare the site for future development.

The site will provide further capacity for the expansion of the CATCH site and attract investment from businesses seeking to co-locate at the CATCH campus.

David Talbot, CEO of HCF CATCH, said: “As the need for greater numbers of highly skilled workers increases within the region it is imperative that at HCF CATCH we have the resources to deliver what the industries need.

“The new training centre, along with the expansion of the site footprint, will enable HCF CATCH to meet these needs.

“The new building will utilise the latest energy technologies for power and air conditioning to support the HCF CATCH drive to reduce our carbon footprint.”

Councillor Peter Wheatley, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Skills and Housing, said: “This is great news for the local workforce. By Increasing the volume of apprenticeships and courses delivered at CATCH, we will create a larger pool of local, skilled labour to aid the recruitment and training process for offshore wind developers and operators.

“Working with the local colleges and a number of Humber-based training providers CATCH will be able to deliver a full suite of operational, health and safety training programmes required by the industry.

“This new development will bring together major offshore wind developers and operations and maintenance providers to drive the content and quality of training provision.”
