Contenders from across the country have been judged and appraised by industry experts across a variety of criteria, including menu development and innovation, sustainable sourcing policies, staff training processes, and marketing and promotional activities.
They also received mystery shopping assessments by industry experts to ascertain customer service levels and the quality of their fish and chips.
Over the coming weeks, shops will be subjected to further mystery shopping assessments and in-depth judging audits.
This next stage of the competition will whittle the UK top 10 regional winners that will compete for the overall national title to be announced in January 2017 after a seven-month long judging process.
Marcus Coleman, Chief Executive at Seafish, organisers of the awards, said: “The Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award is one of the highest honours a fish and chip business can receive.
“Receiving this award is the pinnacle of many friers’ careers, but only one can take home the eventual overall national title. Before then, I would like to offer up my congratulations to the shortlisted businesses and wish them the best of luck as they battle for the regional titles.”
Culminating in an awards ceremony in London on January 26 2017, The National Fish & Chip Awards celebrate the best talent, quality and choice offered by fish and chip businesses through 13 different award categories.

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas — but not as much in Lincoln — tainted by the absence of the country’s oldest festive market, which was cancelled over safety concerns. Yes, this means that the 2023 Lincolnshire Christmas Market will not take place from Thursday.
With tens of thousands of people googling Christmas markets, it is unsurprising to see a flurry of stories in the nationals about City of Lincoln Council’s decision to cancel the 40-year-old event, which attracted more than 350,000 people in four days last year, and reportedly generated around £15 million for the local economy.
Seeing family, being cosy by the fire, and fun in the snow, contrasted with dark mornings and cold weather, are among the most loved — and hated — things about winter for people in Lincoln.
New research shows that 81% of people admitted they hate the winter season. According to a poll of 2,000 by the Post Office, dark mornings (49%), slipping on ice (44%), and having a cold face (41%), runny nose (38%), and paying the heating bills (34%) are considered the worst things about winter.
