Time to celebrate: Lincolnshire Rio stars to be recognised in event next month

Lincolnshire’s Olympians and Paralympians will be recognised for their achievements with a grand celebration in Lincoln next month.

The event, which will take place at Lincoln Castle, is still in the planning stages with a date to be set soon.

Lincolnshire County Council has confirmed it is working on arrangements for the event in partnership with Lincolnshire Sports Partnership.

Proud county residents supported Olympians and Paralympians throughout the international competition in Rio this summer, where team GB achieved record-breaking results.

More than 150,000 people turned out in Manchester on Monday, October 17 to congratulate the Lincolnshire athletes, alongside fellow competitors and their 67 Olympic and 147 Paralympic medals.

Lincolnshire will follow Manchester’s lead with a parade for the county’s sports stars.

Six athletes and one coach from Lincolnshire represented Great Britain in the Olympics in August in August.

The Lincolnshire hockey quartet of Georgie Twigg, Hannah Macleod, Crista Cullen and Shona McCallin claimed victory in the competition, beating the Netherlands in the tournament final to win the GB gold.

Scunthorpe-born Jack Burnell represented the country in open water swimming and was controversially disqualified in the last moments of the 10k marathon race.

Also flying the flag for Lincolnshire was 16-year-old Tom Jarvis, who competed in the Team GB table tennis squad.

Among the Lincolnshire Paralympic competitors representing the country in Rio was Lincoln dressage star Sophie Wells.

Sophie achieved a gold medal at Rio, adding to her tremendous achievements in 2012.
