Lincolnshire Memories: Skegness through the years

The Lincolnshire Reporter team have searched through archive footage to bring you shots of Skegness through the years. The footage, published by the British Film Institute shows an array of images from as early as 1928, giving us a taste of what Skegness was like back in the day. The Lincolnshire Reporter team have searched through archive footage to bring you shots of Skegness through the years.

The footage, published by the British Film Institute shows an array of images from as early as 1928, giving us a taste of what Skegness was like back in the day.

Take a look back at some of the footage we have come across:


1928

Skegness seafront can still be recognised today, with the pier as much of an icon today as it was back then.

The video highlights the pier as one of the main Skegness attractions as amputee high diver Frank ‘Peggy’ Gadsby plummets off the end of the pier to entertain the crowds.

1951

From images of Fenland Services to the boating lakes of Skegness, 1951 had it all.

The film, which was used as an advertisement for Skegness at the time, proudly boasts that the town has the fourth longest pier in Britain.

1961

This cheery Skegness promo tries to shoehorn in every possible attraction on offer in the town.

The video shows off Skegness pier, the best pubs in the area and the town’s beauty contests.

1977

“Skeggy: holiday playground for that part of the East Coast just up a bit from the Wash”

The video follows a family of day trippers who travel to Skegness.

The summer of 1977 was the final one for Skegness pier before it was washed away in a storm over the following winter.

1979

Skegness, as shown as part of a promotional video for Lincolnshire, is highlighted as the perfect seaside resort.

The video shows how amazing Skegness was for holiday goers wanting a relaxing break complete with  picnics and pony rides.
