Former Lincolnshire county councillor Victoria Ayling has resigned from UKIP following disastrous local and national election results in consecutive months for the party.

The controversial figure, who was UKIP’s spokesperson for heritage and tourism, will not be joining another party.

In a short tweet on her account which has since been deleted, she said: “I’m a passionate Brexiteer who belongs to cross party groups such as Leave.EU and Westmonster to keep it on track.

“I wish UKIP well.”

This marks a turbulent last few months for UKIP, which saw them wiped out in terms of seats on Lincolnshire County Council in May.

Former UKIP leader Paul Nuttall was also humiliated in Boston and Skegness at the general election, finishing in third place and over 20,000 votes behind the Conservative Matt Warman.

Ayling stood in two general elections for UKIP, coming in third place in Great Grimsby in 2015 and second in the Sleaford and North Hykeham by-election in December 2016.

She also finished in second place in the Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner election last year.
