This was the third instalment of the Cathedral Cup, a football match between the University of Lincoln men’s football team and the Bishop Grosseteste football team at Sincil Bank.
Bishop Grosseteste won 3-1 last year and University of Lincoln win 6-1 back in 2015.
Lincoln City players Sean Raggett, Jordan Maguire-Drew, Harry Anderson and Josh Vickers were also in attendance.
The game started slowly but was flung into life when Weaver’s corner found Oliver Lawrence at the back post and headed UoL into a one-goal lead.
BGU equalised five minutes later when Hornsey’s right foot shot beat Lincoln’s goalkeeper Warren McCreeth.
Weaver put Lincoln into the lead mid-way through the second half with an excellent low free kick before running through the BGU backline and winning a penalty after being brought down by Ryan Attwell.
Baxter Smith tucked his penalty into the bottom right-hand corner, sending BGU goalkeeper Richard Greenway the wrong way.
Weaver made it 4-1 when when his corner rebounded back to him and hit the ball into the net.
It soon went worse for BGU when James was shown a red card for a stamp on a Lincoln player resulting in a mini-brawl in the middle of the pitch.
Weaver completed his hat-trick a minute later when his left-footed strike beat keeper Greenway again.
University of Lincoln: McCreeth, Lawrence, Malone, Reynolds, Field, Oldfield, Sae-be, Tipper, Weaver, Smith, Dickinson
Subs: Roberts, Tuck, Challenger, Rayner, Chapman
