‘Cheeky’ Facebook scam suggests Lincolnshire Police were offering gift cards to people to test speed cameras

Police have said they will never ask people to do this.

Lincolnshire Police have been forced to confirm that they are not offering gift cards to motorists in exchange for help testing their speed cameras.

The force took to social media after a false suggestion on Facebook on Monday, November 21, that they were giving away £25 gift cards.

A police spokesperson posted on Facebook: “We will never ask people to test our speed cameras.

“This follows a cheeky post on Facebook yesterday suggestion we are giving away £25 gift cards for helping calibrate our speed cameras.

“This is a scam post… our speed detection equipment help saves lives.”

The post unsurprisingly generated debate, surprise and some laughter on social media.

Dave Holmes said: “Find it amazing that you needed to post this but hey ho seems that some have already parked their grey cell in time for drink driving during December!”

Richard S Pearson said: “Wonder how many appeals will feature that as their excuse?”

Chris Black added: “There will be those who will wait for their gift card only to receive their endorsement. Happy Christmas.”

Steve Rayton said: “Oh no I calibrated at least 10 of them was going use the vouchers for the kids’ Christmas presents. Oh well they’ll just have to without.”

Paul Fletcher added: “How can people think that the Facebook post was true?”
