Promotion for Louth and Horncastle MP Victoria Atkins who joins government as Home Office minister

A promotion for the Lincolnshire MP.

Louth and Horncastle MP Victoria Atkins has become the first Conservative MP elected in 2015 to secure a ministerial position, having been appointed as a junior Home Office minister.

The backbencher has received her promotion in the wake of the resignation of former International Development Secretary Priti Patel following her now infamous holiday to Israel earlier this year.

Replacing Patel is Brexiteer Penny Mordaunt, who was previously responsible for disabled people, health and work at the Department for Work and Pensions.

Sarah Newton has taken over Mordaunt’s role, leaving her position at the Home Office vacant for Victoria Atkins.

Atkins is expected to have responsibility for crime, safeguarding and vulnerability.
