Thousands of tonnes of sprouts are set to be sold over Christmas

Brussels sprouts grown in the heart of Lincolnshire are now being harvested and dispatched to supermarkets just in time for Christmas.

A staple of any Christmas dinner, the vegetable goes from stalk to store within just 48 hours, with Asda predicting 1.5 million bags will be sold in the Christmas week alone.

Growers for the supermarket chain have been working from dusk until dawn this week to pick a staggering 150 tonnes of sprouts each day from a field in Whaplode, between Spalding and Holbeach.

Drone footage and aerial picture show the vast scale of the job that takes place for everyone across the country to enjoy their sprouts through the festive season.

An ideal sprout should have 12 leafy green layers, weigh 17.2 grams and be around 3.2cm in circumference.

Tim Carr, Asda Brussels sprouts grower, said: “It really is a 24-hour job to make sure British households get their sprouts this festive season.

“They’re such an essential part of the Christmas dinner, so we need to make sure we’re harvesting the best quality Brussels for customers.”

The price of Brussels has been slashed by Asda to 20p per bag from Wednesday, December 20.

Asda sprout buyer Ken Atkinson said: “We are without a doubt, a nation of sprout-lovers.

“To ensure every home has its sprouts at Christmas, we work closely with our growers to get locally-grown, high-quality sprouts from stalk to store as quickly as possible and at the best possible price for our customers.”
