Animal rights campaigners have criticised a wild animal circus in Swineshead urging residents to shun the event, but circus organisers say their main concern is the wellbeing of their animals.
Circus Mondao, which hosts performances from Friday, February 9, advertises itself as a traditional circus including acrobatics, flows, showgirls and animals including horses, llamas and ponies.
Campaign group Animal Defenders International (ADI) has called the circus on Donington Road ‘outdated’ and claimed the animals’ welfare is compromised by the practice.
The circus is one of two in the country which still feature wild animal acts.
Jan Creamer, President of Animal Defenders International, said: “Animal Defenders International has repeatedly documented the suffering and abuse of animals in circuses.
“Circuses simply cannot meet the needs of animals in small, mobile accommodation.
“Given the constant travel and their temporary nature, circuses cannot provide animals with adequate facilities to keep them physically or psychologically healthy. Welfare is always compromised.
“You can help stop the suffering – don’t go to a circus with animals.”
However, according the the circus’s website, animals are part of the company’s ‘family’, with their needs taking priority.
The website states: “When we move from town to town, our main concern is for our animals and the conditions in which they travel.
“They are the last to be loaded and the first to be unloaded at the next site.
“The average distance travelled is only between 20 and 50 miles.
“Their stables take priority and are erected immediatly upon arrival, which takes around one hour. They are given water, hay nets and new beds to roll around in.
“The animals really enjoy the new grass at the new ground.
“After the show come and visit our animals for a small fee to help towards there care.”
