Government will invest over £20m in five Lincolnshire housing projects

A major investment package.

Over £20 million in government funding will be invested in five Lincolnshire housing projects.

Housing Secretary Sajid Javid and Chancellor Philip Hammond announced the funding for schemes in Spalding, Boston, Lincoln, Gainsborough and Sleaford on Thursday, February 1.

In total, this funding amounts to £21,997,763 which the government hopes will make housing developments viable and get much needed homes built quicker.

Councillor Colin Davie, responsible for economy and place at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “This is excellent news and will help accelerate much-needed housing across the county.

“I’m also pleased that the government has recognised that new roads are an integral part of delivering new housing, and need to go hand-in-hand with these sorts of projects.

“Businesses often tell us that good quality housing is a key factor in attracting the new recruits they need as they grow, so this investment should mean a boost for the local economy.

“I think the success of these bids is a reflection of the hard work of local councils and developers, and I hope to see local businesses winning the contracts to deliver these projects.”

Below is a breakdown of the funding for each project:

Spalding

More than half of the funding in Lincolnshire has been given for plans for a relief road around Spalding.

The £12 million for the Northern Spalding Sustainable Urban Extension and Section 5 of the Spalding Western Relief Road is designed to support the town’s predicted housing growth over the next two decades.

Boston

A total of £3.5 million will be invested in a new road through the Boston Quadrant development, which will provide 500 new homes and a new football stadium for Boston United when completed.

Boston and Skegness MP Matt Warman said: “On top of the flood barrier, it is another official vote of confidence in our thriving town.

“I raised this with ministers along with Lincolnshire colleagues, and I’m delighted Boston is one of the first projects to be supported.”

Lincoln

Spa Road in the Stamp End area of Lincoln will be upgraded thanks to £2.8 million in funding, which the government hopes will unlock 312 homes planned for the area.

This is the highest of the three investments announced by the government today for the Central Lincolnshire area which covers Lincoln, West Lindsey and North Kesteven.

Gainsborough

Another £2,123,184 has been provided for the Gainsborough Southern Urban Extension, which could lead to up to 245 homes being built by 2022.

The town’s MP Sir Edward Leigh said: “We are determined to build the right homes in the right places and help the next generation to get the keys to a home of their own.”

Sleaford

A final £2 million has been approved for the Sleaford West Quadrant development, which will provide access to a 1,400-home development.

The money will help to provide a new roundabout to provide access for a school and housing on the site between The Drove and the A15.

A minimum of £8.6 million of developer contributions going towards the infrastructure needed for the development, including local facilities, such as health care and a community centre was approved by North Kesteven District Council in 2017.

Council leader Richard Wright said: “This is brilliant news for the council, district and Central Lincolnshire as a whole.

“It is a strong vote of confidence by the government and Homes England in our local plan.

“It recognises our excellent housing and economic development strategies, and our ability to deliver.”
