Mayor of Boston could have car and staff stripped from him if he refuses to resign

The council leader wants to force him to resign.

The Mayor of Boston could have his mayoral car and staff stripped from him by the council if he does not resign, the leader of the authority has warned.

Boston Borough Council leader Michael Cooper said that the council could move forward with withdrawing Councillor Brian Rush’s administrative support if he did not step down.

Councillors voted by a margin of 21 to 2 to support a motion calling for his resignation as mayor over alleged offensive and anti-Muslim comments at a meeting on Monday, February 12.

Members also supported an amendment to the motion calling for all administrative support for his activities as mayor to be withdrawn.

However, a defiant Councillor Rush told Lincolnshire Reporter on the morning of Tuesday, February 13 that he was still Mayor of Boston and had not seen any good reason to resign.

Speaking to Lincolnshire Reporter, Councillor Cooper said: “I’ll have to speak to my colleagues to see if we implement the withdrawing of the administrative support.

“Practically, this would mean he wouldn’t have his car or his organising secretary.

“We will be meeting to decide on a best course of action.”

The council leader refused to give a timescale on how quickly this could all be implemented.
