Attempted murder arrest after elderly man stabbed in Grimsby

Praise for officer who detained the armed suspect.

A man has been arrested in Grimsby on suspicion of attempted murder after an elderly victim was stabbed multiple times.

Humberside Police has also praised a dog handler who managed to detain the suspect and arrest him despite suffering multiple injuries himself.

Humberside Police were called to Corporation Road, Grimsby, at 5:50pm on Monday, March 12 following reports that a man had been stabbed.

The 68-year-old victim had stab wounds to his arm and back and was treated at Hull Royal Infirmary.

On arrival, dog handler PC Ian Sweeney cornered the 21-year-old suspect in the garden of the house before disarming and arresting him.

He suffered injuries to hid face, legs and chest after scuffling with the armed man.

PC Sweeney has been praised for his efforts. The force added he even made sure that his dog was fed and exercised before heading to the hospital for treatment on his injuries.

Who’s a good boy? Police dog Logan was on the scene of the arrest.

Chief Constable Lee Freeman said: “PC Sweeney went above and beyond the call of duty to arrest this man.

“He courageously put himself into harm’s way in order to ensure that this suspect was apprehended and that our communities remained safe.”

Police say the incident is isolated but investigations are ongoing. They added people would see increased police presence in the area.

A number of plants, believed to be cannabis, are thought to be linked to the incident and have been seized by police.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Supt Tony Cockerill, said: “We believe this was an isolated incident and there was no risk to the wider public.

“The full circumstances are being investigated and you will see an increased police presence in the area, both as part of the investigation and to provide reassurance to the community.”

A man and woman arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender have been released without charge.
