A man was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after jumping off the pier at Cleethorpes beach over the weekend.

Cleethorpes Coastguard and HM Coastguard Donna Nook Rescue Team rushed to the scene on Saturday, May 19 after receiving a report that a male had jumped off the pier and was still in the water injured.

The man had already been pulled out of the water by a member of the public, who was on his jet ski in the area, by the time the rescue teams arrived.

The Coastguard teams established a helicopter landing site on the beach and Humberside Police enforced a cordon on the promenade.

The male was airlifted to Hull Royal Infirmary by an HM Coastguard helicopter and he required immediate medical attention in hospital.

A spokesperson for EMAS said: “We received a call at 10:20 on the May 19 to an incident on Cleethorpes Pier. The caller reported a patient who had fallen. We sent a paramedic responder, a double crewed ambulance and the Humberside Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter. One patient was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary for further care.”

In a post on its Facebook page, Cleethorpes Coastguard said: “Jumping off any structure at height into the sea or any other body of water is extremely dangerous.

“You never know if there are any hidden dangers under the surface of the water or how shallow the water is. In this incident, it is believed that the male landed in only about four feet of water. We wish the casualty a successful and speedy recovery.”
