Voice of Lincoln: Can we take better care of our streets?

Residents criticised the grimy streets on social media

Residents in Lincoln have taken to social media to criticise the “filthy” High Street.

One member of the Facebook group You’re Probably From Lincoln If…. posted images of the black grime stains with the caption “Anyone else noticed how disgustingly dirty the pavements are in town?”.

The post drew lots of support from other residents, who agreed that the streets were “vile”.

The Lincolnite visited the High Street to see what the fuss was about and to ask other shoppers what they thought.

Shane Harrison, Cleansing Services Officer at the City of Lincoln Council, said: “Our contractors Biffa do a thorough litter pick and street sweep each morning, but they do not always power wash the streets and pavements with water.

“This summer has been especially dry and we have not benefitted from the natural cleaning effect of the rain, which makes a considerable difference.

“However, we are aware of the need for a deep clean in places, and have asked Biffa to power wash these areas on an ongoing basis from 22 July onwards.

“In the meantime, we would ask night-time business owners in problem areas to help us keep Lincoln clean by swilling and brushing outside their premises during this dry weather spell.”
