Family pay tribute to great grandmother killed in A17 crash

Bernie was looking forward to celebrating her 65th wedding anniversary

The family of an 84-year-old woman who died following a collision on the A17 at Swineshead last week have said they are “shocked and devastated”.

The victim has ben named by police as Mary Bernadette Blades from the Spalding area.

Mary was airlifted to hospital after the crash on Wednesday, August 29. She and another casualty suffered serious injuries but Mary later passed away.

A further two people were treated for minor injuries.

Mary’s family released a tribute to her on Monday, September 3.

Married to Frank, the couple were looking forward to celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary in November.

A family member said: “We are all deeply shocked and devastated by this tragic accident.”

‘Bernie’ also leaves a son and daughter, two grandchildren and a three-week old great granddaughter.

Investigating officers renewed their appeal at the end of last week to find witnesses to the collision.

It had involved a white Mercedes Benz van and a silver Citroen Xsara, both travelling northbound, at the junction with Villa Lane at around 12.15pm on August 29.

Mary had been a passenger in the Citroen Xsara.
