Crews discover cause of Grantham train fire

More services have been altered this week

Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue have determined what caused a train to catch fire at Grantham Railway Station on Friday.

Crews from Grantham, Corby Glen, Billingborough and Newark rushed to the scene of a fire, which damaged the undercarriage of a train during the evening on Friday, October 5 and sent smoke billowing into the night sky.

Trains were delayed and cancelled before the fire was extinguished using one hose reel and foam.

Many people were left stranded as a result.

Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue have now been confirmed that the fire was caused by an engine fault.

A spokesman for Hull Trains said: “The circumstances surrounding the small fire and the detrainment at Grantham on Friday are still under investigation.

“Our team maintenance team is working around the clock to get the train back in service as quickly as possible. Customers who were detrained on Friday were safely taken on to their destinations in taxis. We hope to be back to running a normal service as soon as possible.”

Hull Trains said on their website that due to a fault which occurred on one of their trains they have had to make service alterations from October 8-12.

Customers with Hull Trains only tickets valid on a partially or fully cancelled service may use these on any alternative Hull Trains service until the end of the day on Friday, October 12.
