Mum of five strikes man with bottle for “eyeing her up”

She was given a suspended jail sentence

A mother of five who struck a man over the head with a beer bottle in a seaside bar has been spared jail.

Philippa Cuthbertson walked straight up to victim Nathan Blades and struck him.

Edna Leonard, prosecuting, told Lincoln Crown Court that Mr Blades, who suffers from spina bifida, was chatting to his brother-in-law in the Kush Bar underneath Busters Bar on Grand Parade, Skegness at the time.

Miss Leonard said: “The defendant was at a table nearby. She walked over to the complainant and hit him on the side and then smashed the bottle she was holding.

“She then attempted to walk out of the club but was stopped by security staff. She was taken to a room and police were called.”

Cuthbertson went on to confess saying: “I hit him on the head with a bottle. He shouldn’t have aggravated me.”

Cuthbertson, 36, of Roman Bank, Skegness, admitted a charge of unlawful wounding as a result of the incident on September 23, 2018.

She was given an 18 month jail sentence suspended for two years with 100 hours of unpaid work. She was also given a three month night time curfew and ordered to pay £250 compensation to Mr Blades.

Recorder Patrick Upward QC told her: “What you did was appalling whatever may have been the background.”

Terry Boston, in mitigation, said Cuthbertson had no previous convictions and pleaded guilty to the offence at the first opportunity.

He told the court that Cuthbertson believed the victim had been grinning at her and “eyeing her up” but her perception may have been affected by the amount she had to drink.

“This woman has a problem with drink. She doesn’t drink regularly but when she does she binge drinks and gets drunk,” said Mr Boston.
