Murder probe launched after assault victim dies

A man has been charged

A local 40-year-old man has died following a serious assault in Boston, sparking a murder investigation.

Darren Birks, 40, died after an assault in Boston on April 29 at 9.45 pm on Ingram Road.

He was taken to hospital, but police confirmed on Friday, May 10 that he had since died.

Cole Newark was arrested and charged in connection with the assault. Newark, 20, of Witham Bank West in Boston has been remanded in custody following a court hearing at Lincoln Magistrate’s Court on May 3.

Detective Chief Inspector Karl Whiffen from East Midlands Special Operation Unit said: “First and foremost I would like to offer my heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones.

“This is now a murder investigation and our aim is to establish an accurate picture of what has occurred.

“I would ask people who have information, or who have witnessed the assault to get in touch with Lincolnshire Police.

“If you were in the Ingram Road area at 9:45 PM on the 29th April then please contact us.”
