Devastating animal casualty as Lincolnshire Wildlife Park flooded

A much loved parrot at Lincolnshire Wildlife Park fell victim to the bad weather as flooding caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Lincolnshire Wildlife Park is the UK’s premier Animal Rehabilitation Centre with over 2,000 residents. It is also home to The National Parrot Sanctuary, which is the World’s largest Parrot Sanctuary.

One of the parrots hid in a box during the bad weather, but sadly drowned, prompting an emotional Facebook post from the park.

It read: “Sadly our first victim of the bad rain, she thought it best to hide in her box overnight but drowned. This girl (one with the yellow head) has been with me for over 20 years and as a wild bird became my mate …. Gutted is the only word to explain it … sodding weather. #vasaparrot #gutted #feelingsick”

The park on Dickonhill Road in Friskney was closed over the weekend as paths were underwater and the lake was overflown.

The park has since confirmed the water flow is now under control, but “the park remains closed until the safety and enjoyment of visitors can be assured once more”.

Fundraising page

Suzie Eglon set up a Just Giving page for The Parrot Zoo, which has so far raised £1,930.00 at the time of writing.

On the fundraising page Suzie said: “After the extraordinarily heavy rainfall of June 2019 I’ve watched my partner and his colleagues (including the owner) go above and beyond in extreme weather to ensure the safety of 1000s of animals in their care.

“They’ve been soaked to skin, wrung out their socks despite wearing waterproofs and wellies and in one case stripped to their pants to redirect water pouring in from a well. They’ve done this with smiles on their faces and without complaint for several days now.

“The water flow is under control but the park remains closed until the safety and enjoyment of visitors can be assured once more.

“This clean up is not only time consuming and hard work but also extremely costly. The full cost is not known as yet until the remaining water subsides and a full assessment can be made but it will definitely run into the 1000s to repair the damage alone.”

On Saturday the parked said they were “overwhelmed by the many kind gestures of help and support” saying “we will do our utmost to get things sorted and open back up again as soon as possible.”
