Heatwave to spark thunderstorms tonight

Warnings in place this evening

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for scattered thunderstorms on Thursday afternoon.

The warning, which covers much of the east of the UK, predicts sudden and heavy downpours, possible flooding and lightning strikes.

It’s in place from 3pm on Thursday, July 25 until 4am on Friday, July 26.

Forecasters said: “Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.”

Extreme heat has caused Network Rail to cancel a number of its trains today. It said there is a risk of tracks buckling and people should avoid travel where possible.
