MOD reveals what suspected bomb really was

A bomb squad were called out

A suspect mortar, which caused the call out of an army bomb disposal unit in Skegness, turned out to be a piece of scrap metal, the MOD has confirmed.

Lincolnshire Police were called to a report of a possible mortar found on a beach at Gibraltar Point in Croft near Skegness at 10.04am on Sunday, July 7.

On arrival the EOD operator identified the item as being a metal non-ammunition item. As it looked like it could be an item of ordnance it was removed from the scene for subsequent disposal to prevent future call outs.

The Ministry of Defence has since confirmed that it was just a piece of scrap metal.
