Green light for 80 Gainsborough homes amid traffic outcry

Developers argued sufficient parking would be provided

Council officers in West Lindsey have approved plans for an 80-home development in Gainsborough, despite concerns over highways disruption from local residents.

Beal Homes’ amended application consists of a mix of two, three and four-bed houses on land south of The Belt Road in Gainsborough.

The development was planned to be accessed from two points on Sunningdale Way.

Residents had concerns over an estimated 160 additional vehicles. They suggested the entrance could be provided through Belt Road.

Objectors would prefer the development was entered from The Belt Road.

Elaine and Stephen Saxelby said: “The road is not wide enough and so many vans park down the side you can barely see when you are pulling out of the junction as it is.

“Add another couple of hundred cars accessing it and I dread to think what may happen.

“We have a young daughter and would be worried for her safety.”

Tracey Burnett said: “There are daily near misses at the four-way junction on Sunningdale Way. It is in desperate need of a roundabout due to the speeds of some vehicles coming into the estate from The Avenue.”

Designs for the street scene submitted to West Lindsey.

Lincolnshire County Council’s Highways department did not object to the proposals.

Beal Homes said in documents submitted to the authority that access had been agreed at outline stage.

They said the “simple” road network established “a clear hierarchy” across the development and that “sufficient parking” would be provided.

They said the development would be designed to “harmonise” with neighbouring properties.

A total of 20 of the homes will be classed as affordable.
