Police watchdog investigates response to domestic incidents prior to woman’s death

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating Lincolnshire Police’s response to a number of domestic incidents reported by a mother-of-two, whose body was later found at an address in Grantham in April.

Police launched a murder investigation after the body of 23-year-old Daniela Espirito Santo was found at a property on Chestnut Grove just before 11.30pm on Wednesday, April 8.

Julio Jesus, 30, from Beechcroft Road in Grantham, appeared via Skype at Lincoln Crown Court via video link on Monday, May 11 charged with the manslaughter of Daniela and a further charge of assault on April 8.

He spoke only to confirm his name. No charges were put to him and his application for bail was refused.

He was remanded in custody until a further hearing at Lincoln Crown Court on August 21.

His trial will commence on October 5.

Police watchdog investigation

Lincolnshire Police have made a mandatory referral to the IOPC as is required when a person dies or is seriously injured following direct or indirect police contact.

The IOPC has now launched an an investigation.

An IOPC spokesperson said: “Following a referral from Lincolnshire Police, the IOPC is independently investigating the police response to a number of domestic incidents reported by Miss Daniela Espirito Santo, whose body was found at an address in Grantham late on the evening of Wednesday, April 8.

“We are investigating whether the actions and decision-making by Lincolnshire Police in response to the incidents were in accordance with policies and guidance.

“IOPC investigators have made contact with Ms Santo’s family to explain our role and how the investigation will progress.”

The IOPC oversees the police complaints system in England and Wales and investigates the most serious matters, including death following police contact. It is independent and makes its decisions “entirely independently of the police and government.”

Fundraising and police witness appeal

Since her death over £1,700 has been raised for the family of Daniela on a GoFundMe page created by Jodie Stafford on behalf of Isabel Espirito Santo.

She described Daniela as a “wonderful, kind hearted and beautiful young lady who lived for her children”.

Meanwhile, Lincolnshire Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area around 11.30pm on April 8 and saw or heard anything unusual to get in touch.

Anyone who knew either Daniela or Julio and may have relevant information is also urged to contact police on 101.
