Community hit by knee-deep flash flooding in Market Rasen

Devastating flooding has impacted many in the town

Streets across Market Rasen resembled rivers when the area was hit by flash flooding yesterday evening.

A number of homes and businesses were flooded, and cars were marooned on roads.

The devastating storm triggered a remarkable community effort to get the town back on its feet, with many working through the night to help neighbours.

While fire crews pumped water away from houses, teams from Travis Perkins and Buildbase supplied materials and sandbags to those in need.

Scores of other businesses and volunteers also came together to take action.

A number of local people were moved to temporary accommodation until their homes could be made safe.

PC Devlin of the he Market Rasen police team posted on social media overnight: “It’s certainly been a challenge this evening and devastating for so many residents around the Linwood Road area.

“Wholeheartedly, I feel so much sadness for all those affected and have suffered damage to their homes. Everyone that needed to evacuate has done so to our knowledge. I will come and visit as many people as I can again tomorrow and help with the aftermath. Stay safe as best you can.”

Councillor Stephen Bunney, leading efforts by the Market Rasen Action Group, described the situation as “devastating”, and urged drivers to go slowly through the town as water was being pushed towards people’s homes.

Councillor Bunney urged anyone in need of help or advice to attend Festival Hall in Market Rasen, open from 8am.

Action group admins posted on their Facebook page overnight: “A huge shout out to all the staff at Travis Perkins Market Rasen and Alford Travis Perkins staff, and all the volunteers who turned out tonight to help with bagging sand up and delivering to flooded homes.

“Also a big thanks to Rasen Buildbase who have been helping with sand bags too.

“If anyone needs sand bags tomorrow please go down to Travis Perkins who will help.

“Bags have been placed at homes and key points in Middle Rasen.

“Also thankyou to our emergency personnel for their help.

“Thankyou everyone for all your help.

“Community kindness rocks.”

Much of the water had subsided by the morning of Wednesday, August 17, and most roads had reopened, however people were warned that there was a significant amount of debris and mud littering routes.

Elsewhere, Grimsby Town’s match against Carlisle was abandoned due to flooding on the pitch.
