One of the worst peacetime calamities in Lincoln’s history wasn’t caused by fire or natural disaster, but a virulent disease that plagued hundreds of people.

The Typhoid epidemic in the early 20th century arose from abysmal sanitation, killing at least 100 and infecting ten times as many.
