Hill Holt Wood is a nationally recognised, award-winning and well established Environmental Social Enterprise, working to prove the value of ancient woodland in the 21st Century. It currently employs 40 full and part time Rangers and is engaged in a wide range of activities which include the education of disadvantaged young people, extensive forestry operations, Eco Design and build and significant events and hire, including Weddings, Corporate entertaining and landmark birthday celebrations. It has enjoyed considerable success over the last 16 years and continues to build on its strong position focussing on sustainability, environmentalism, conservation and social awareness.
The role of a Ranger at Hill Holt Wood is a multi-faceted one, and one that is physically demanding so a reasonable level of fitness is desirable. The variety of tasks that you will be asked to perform is cited, by the staff, as the most attractive aspect of the Ranger’s role.
Hill Holt Wood looks to engage young people in the built environment via construction qualifications. We are therefore looking for an individual with construction skills that also has an interest in the sustainable aspect of building using materials such as timber, straw bale and rammed earth.
Duties involved, and skills required include:
The job will involve planning and delivering our construction qualifications and skills workshops to a wide range of groups including our school referrals aged 11-16 and our Study Programme learners aged 16-19-year olds including some of our Special Educational needs learners aged 16-25, through to visiting universities interested in our natural building qualifications. Our courses range from Entry 3 to Level 2.
The successful applicant must have a range of skills and qualifications associated with construction and be able to lead workshops and deliver our construction qualifications. They must be able to complete all necessary paperwork in a timely manner and must be computer literate. A level 3 Education and Training or Assessor qualification would be advantageous along with experience in teaching, training or mentoring trainees. Emphasis must be placed on the importance of encouraging the students to obtain practical skills and experience in projects such as woodwork and painting and decorating along with traditional techniques such as timber framing and construction of straw bale buildings. The applicant must be able to enthuse and engage young people not only in construction but also in the impact that buildings can have on the overall environment. They will also possess excellent organisational skills and must be able to work as part of our team but also be able to set their own targets and work on their own initiative
Full driving licence essential.
