The Royal Air Force’s remotely piloted eyes in the sky achieved a significant milestone in Lincolnshire, with the first ever Protector drone flight in the UK taking place from the fleet’s new home of RAF Waddington near Lincoln.

The first of the 16 drones arrived at RAF Waddington in September, ahead of a start to service which has been proposed for late 2024. Their arrival came four years on from a £100 million deal signed by the Ministry of Defence to test the drone.

The future of military defence is starting to begin here in Lincolnshire, with the arrival of the first Protector drone at RAF Waddington — a remotely piloted air system that can attack targets and complete surveillance anywhere in the world, while being operated from the air base south of Lincoln.

Protector drones are unmanned aircraft kitted out with an array of surveillance equipment, allowing crews back at the RAF Waddington base to guide ground squads from anywhere in the world, as well as launch military offensives if necessary.

The annual RAFA Lincoln Duck Race had its wings clipped on Wednesday as poor weather cancelled the charity event, and it will not be rescheduled due to time constraints.

The Duck Race was due for its fifth outing on the River Witham on Wednesday, September 20 — with thousands of rubber ducks due to be dropped into the river for a race to the finish line in the name of charity.
