Closures set for Newland/Avenue traffic lights work

Junction works: Closures at the Newland and Avenue junction will disrupt traffic for 12 weeks while various improvements are made.

Traffic restrictions will be in place for 12 weeks from January 3, 2012 while work to refurbish the traffic lights on Newland and The Avenue in Lincoln takes place.

The Avenue will be closed to southbound traffic throughout, with a full road closure after rush hour on Friday 10 February to Sunday evening 19 February.

Newland and Carholme Road will remain open, but some lane restrictions will be in place at various times during the 12-week period.

The existing traffic light equipment will be refurbished, and new pedestrian crossings will be put in place at the junction.

The junction and its approaches will also be resurfaced, with street lighting upgraded and extra low voltage signals equipment installed to reduce energy consumption.

Tim Clark, principal engineer, said: “The existing traffic lights have come to the end of their operational life. The new installation will last for the next 25 years.

“We’ll carry out the improvements as quickly as we can, doing some work at night if possible, to help minimise disruption and keep people moving on the roads.”

Diversion routes will be signposted on all the main junction approaches. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys.
