Former Grantham teacher dies in Spanish floods

His wife also died

Two British pensioners including a former Grantham teacher, were killed by flash floods in Majorca this week.

Antony Green, 77, who was a retired head teacher from Lancashire and worked in Germany and later reportedly Grantham, and his wife Delia, 75, died in S’Illot on the island’s east coast when their taxi was swept away by floodwaters at around 8pm on Tuesday.

The couple, who retired to Moffat in Scotland from Greater Manchester, are understood to have been on their way to their hotel in the east coast fishing town of Cala Bona after landing at Palma Airport.

It is believed that the taxi driver Juan Sillero also died.

In a statement the couple’s family said: “Delia and Tony were a loving, kind and caring couple. They were at their happiest when they were with their family and friends. They recently celebrated 55 years of marriage.”

Hundreds of locals and tourists were left trapped in homes submerged in up to a metre of water, while others clung to their balconies, rooftops, and even trees waiting to be rescued.

At least 12 people are now believed to have died after torrential rainstorms hit the area around Sant Llorenc des Cardassar.
