Good gourd! The Lincolnshire pumpkin patch fit for giants

Try not to get squashed by these

A family-run farm has gone giant in every way to become one of the largest producers of pumpkins in the country.

Bell’s Horticultural, based in Benington near Boston, started off as bit of fun a few years ago and has grown to provide retailers with around half a million pumpkins.

The pumpkin festival kicks off every year with Lincolnshire’s Giant Pumpkins way off.

Especially hot weather this summer has meant that growing conditions have been difficult.

Despite tough weather, the patch had lots of large entries for their competition and the winner brought a whopping 78kg pumpkin.

There were some monster entries.

Robert Bell, managing director at Bell’s Horticultural, said: “We really just did it for locals to have a bit of fun at the beginning.

“But with visitor numbers increasing every year, we now all really enjoy putting the whole event together.

“For us it’s a celebration of all things Autumn and the changing of the season.”

There’s lots more to do for the whole family as well, with a pick your own patch, carving tent, maize maze and potato catapult.

It even has a giant pumpkin canon, the only one in the country, where you can fire pumpkins at a target.

Bell’s pumpkin patch is open to the public for free every day from October 20 to 3.

They even have a pumpkin blaster at their patch.
