East Lindsey ‘hotspot’ for youth homelessness

More young people have sought help for homelessness than any other district
The number of people without a permanent home has fallen, although the cost of living crisis will present challenges

The district of East Lindsey in Lincolnshire has been highlighted a ‘hotspot’ for youth homelessness in a new report.

Research by Centrepoint, a UK charity for youth homelessness, has found that East Lindsey has one the highest proportions of youth homelessness in England with 5.5% of young people sleeping rough. The average national proportion is 1%.

The data is based on Freedom of Information request responses from 90% of English councils who were asked to reveal how many people aged 16-24 had approached them for help because they were homeless or at risk of becoming homeless from 2017 – 2018.

The data also showed that more than half of those who approached their local councils for help received ‘no meaningful support’ putting them a risk of sleeping rough which could lead to violence and abuse.

Other hotspots include North Devon (5.5%) and Burnley (4.8%).
