Lincolnshire wood stages ‘out-of-this-world’ star-gazing event

Something different this December

Experience the cosmos with a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie at a popular 900 acre Lincolnshire wood.

Chambers Farm Woods in Market Rasen will stage an out-of-this-world stargazing event on Friday, December 14 that will coincide with Geminid meteor shower.

The cosmic shower is produced by pieces of debris left by an astroid called Phaethon burning up as they come into contact with the Earth’s atmosphere.

There will also be chance to observe the crescent moon and the possibility of seeing a rare comet.

Astronomer Richard Darn said: “The Geminid meteor shower is by far the best of the year and finger’s crossed we should see a few burn up and leave trails behind them.

“The wonderful light show is caused by the earth entering a field of debris left by an asteroid called Phaethon.  It can be a magnificent spectacle.

“Early on the moon will be looking good so we’ll encourage people to take a picture with their phones and we’ll also do a constellation tour and explain how telescopes work. Lincolnshire is proving a real hot spot for stargazing.”

Chambers Farm Wood is signed off the B1202 Bardney to Wragby road. The event starts at 7:30pm and mince pies, mulled wine and hot refreshments are included in the price of £10 adults and £6.50 children.

The event will go ahead in all weather and includes a colourful beginner’s talk in the Forestry Commission’s education barn.

Tickets can be purchased online here.
