Rugby: Proud Lincoln Touch youngsters play in national tournament

A great achievement for the Lincoln players

Seven players from Lincoln Touch represented Midland Tigers at the National Touch Tournament in Cambridgeshire over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The Junior National Finals were held in St Ives on Saturday and Sunday, August 24-25. The tournament was also used by the England Touch Rugby scouts to select potential players to represent England for the 2020 season.

John Winterbourne, Arhcie Rossinghton, Flynn Smith and Max Thompson all played in the Under-15s Boys competition and their team finished in second place overall.

Joe Thompson, Molly Rushbrook and Polly Swann all played in the Under-18s Mixed Team tournament for the Tigers and achieved respectable fourth and fifth-placed finishes. Former Lincoln Touch player Tyler Williams also featured in the Mixed Team.

Thompson and Swann were named Midland Tigers’ male and female Most Valued Players for their respective teams.

Beverley Parker Swann from Lincoln Touch said: “Many congratulations to everyone that took part in the tournament, which is proving that Touch Rugby is going from strength to strength across the country.”

Lincoln Touch’s Joe Thompson was also part of the England Under-15 Mixed Team competing in the European Junior Touch Tournament in Paris earlier this month. He was part of the team who won the gold medal with a 6-3 victory over Wales in the final.

England drew their first pool match with Wales before going on to record wins over Scotland, Ireland, France, Czech Republic, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates. Thompson scored seven tries for the team.

Meanwhile, Lincoln Rugby Club’s Men’s 1st XV will begin their season with a home clash against Newark in the NLD Cup on Saturday, August 31.
