Lincolnshire County Councillor Marc Jones, also the Chairman of the Lincoln Conservative Association, will run as the Conservative candidate for the Great Grimsby MP seat in next year’s general elections.
Marc Jones was elected as a county councillor for Lincoln Bracebridge in 2013 and is the leader’s support councillor. He was previously a City of Lincoln Council councillor and Deputy Leader.
He also sits on the planning and regulation committee at the County Council and is a governor at two local schools. He juggles these responsibilities with running his own business advising people on property issues.
Marc Jones said: “I was born in Grimsby, and I still have family in Grimsby. If you want to go and do these things, you need to have an affinity with the place. I’m really pleased to have the opportunity to do that.
“Grimsby is a very different place now. With the current MP stepping down, anything can happen.
“There are a lot of new builds, and prosperous businesses growing in the area. I’ve been there and spoken to businesses, and they’re enthusiastic about something different.
“I’m really looking forward to getting on with the campaign. It’s a genuine honour to have this opportunity to serve the people who live there and the business people who I’ll get to meet in the next few months.”
The Great Grimsby seat is held by Labour’s Austin Mitchell, who won by a slim majority of 714 in 2010 over then-Conservative Victoria Ayling, who since moved to UKIP and won a County Council seat, and will run for the same seat on behalf of the party.
The veteran Labour MP since 1977 made the announcement he will be stepping down at the next general elections, as he turns 80 this September.
