Bid to swim away from police: A suspected burglar attempted to escape police by jumping in River Witham, but he was arrested along with two others.

A suspected burglar attempted to escape police by jumping in River Witham.

He was arrested, along with a man and a woman, following a burglary at the McColl’s newsagents on Brant Road in Lincoln.

The incident happened at around 4.20am on Monday, October 14, after police were called to the Brant Road Shopping Centre when three people using a white ‘R’ registered Hyundai coupe car were seen acting suspiciously.

A police patrol arrived at the shopping centre as the car was being driven away.

Police followed the car through Lincoln until the occupants abandoned the car and ran away, heading into the Siemens complex near Pelham Bridge.

A man aged 33 and a woman aged 32 were arrested almost immediately.

A third person, the driver of the car, a man aged 35, tried to escape police and jumped in River Witham, but Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue removed him from the water and he was arrested.

The three suspects remain in custody at Lincoln Police Station for questioning.
